Wide World of Metal

Welcome to the Wide World of Metal!

This week, I attended my very first convention dedicated entirely to metal roofing.

Now, before you picture a room full of people enthusiastically discussing screws and sheet metal for eight hours straight, let me tell you something surprising: it wasn't boring. Not even a little.

In fact, it was engaging, informative, and filled with some truly excellent people in our industry. And, as an added bonus, one vendor brought the most adorable pupper imaginable. Honestly, that dog may have stolen the entire show.

The Road to York

After work on Wednesday, we packed up and headed from Akron to the bustling metropolis of York, Pennsylvania. The five-hour drive went surprisingly smoothly. While it seemed like everyone between Ohio and Pennsylvania was being absolutely hammered by storms, we somehow threaded the needle and encountered little more than a few drops on the windshield.

We rolled into our hotel just before midnight and settled in for some much-needed sleep. Even though I wasn't entirely sure what to expect the next day, I was excited. Our mission was simple: find unique products, identify opportunities that could provide value for our customers, and source components that would help CSS continue to stand out in the marketplace.

No pressure.

First Impressions

The next morning, we arrived at the York County Fairgrounds under a bright Pennsylvania sun. Walking into the convention center felt a bit like stepping into another world. The blast of cool air combined with the excitement of the event actually gave me goosebumps.

Naturally, one of the first things we did was stop for a photo. Were there better banners available? Absolutely. Did we care? Not really. We were excited to be there representing our little company, and that enthusiasm won out over photography strategy.

At registration, we were greeted by a friendly staff member who quickly got us checked in. She handed us our passes along with what can only be described as the Swiss Army knife of lanyards. This thing had pockets, compartments, holders—you name it.

She even shared a story about showing a young attendee how to hide candy in the various pockets. Frankly, I feel like this feature deserves to be highlighted in future marketing materials.

Armed with our swag bags and tactical candy-storage devices, we headed into the convention.

Metal Roofing... But Make It Exciting

The convention itself wasn't huge, but it offered a fantastic variety of vendors and products.

One of the biggest surprises for me was the machinery. Specifically, the technology behind modern metal-bending equipment. Before this event, I never would have imagined I'd be interested in watching a machine bend metal.

Then I watched one in action.

Mandy's eyes lit up like a three-year-old on Christmas morning as the demonstration began. If you've ever watched someone truly geek out over something they love, you'll understand the level of excitement. And honestly? Once I saw what that machine could create, I understood the enthusiasm.

These machines are smart. Really smart.

The People Behind the Industry

As we made our way through the aisles, the reception was a little mixed—and entertaining.

Thanks to Mandy's decades in the industry, some vendors practically sprinted across the room to give her a hug. Others seemed slightly puzzled by the sight of two women walking through an event that was not only heavily male-dominated, but featured a significant Amish presence as well.

Fortunately, any uncertainty disappeared the moment we introduced ourselves.

Everyone was eager to talk, share ideas, and explore ways we might work together.

One of my favorite parts of the day was meeting team members from vendors we already work with. Devin, in particular, was welcoming, engaging, and made us feel right at home.

I also had the privilege of standing nearby while Mandy caught up with industry friends and former colleagues. Let's just say there was some tea spilled.

I may not have known all the characters involved, but I quickly learned that somewhere out there, a reality show called The Real Lives of Metal Contractors is quietly unfolding behind the scenes.

Needless to say, I'm already looking forward to Season 2 at next year's conference.

Products We're Excited About

Of course, no convention would be complete without discovering some great new products.

One standout was a company offering an innovative take on snow cleats for metal roofing. We brought samples back to the shop, and we're excited to show them off. These provide homeowners with a practical, customizable addition that enhances both safety and functionality.

Another fascinating find was a manufacturer producing decorative horse door pulls. Available in a variety of stunning finishes, these pieces add a distinctive touch of craftsmanship and character that can elevate any space.

They're unique, elegant, and definitely memorable.

More to Come

The convention gave us exactly what we hoped for: new ideas, new partnerships, and new products that can help us better serve our customers.

It also reminded me that even in industries that might seem niche from the outside, there are passionate people, innovative ideas, and plenty of stories worth sharing.

And sometimes, there's even a really cute dog.

Stay tuned—we'll be sharing more product spotlights, photos, and industry updates in the coming weeks!
